Snow Removal Safety Tips and State Law

From the Muskegon County Road Commission:

If you’re still digging out from yesterday’s snowfall, we’d like to remind residents and business owners along state highways to use extra caution and follow the law when clearing snow.

Avoid piling snow at the ends of driveways along the highway shoulder, and don’t push snow across the road. Both can leave snow or slush on the roadway and create dangerous visibility issues for drivers.

Michigan Vehicle Code 257.677a prohibits the “obstruction of safety vision by removal or deposit of snow, ice, or slush.” That includes snowbanks at the end of driveways, which can make it harder for vehicles to safely enter the roadway.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our roads safe after the storm!
